Synthesizing 21st Century Skills with Data and Leadership
Updated: Aug 9
This fall, I joined the YetGen 21st Century Skills Program, which is a highly selective and multi-stage leadership initiative in Turkey. While the program covers a vast curriculum from digital literacy to design thinking, my primary goal was to bridge the gap between my technical interests in sports analytics and economics and the practical skills required to drive real-world impact.
Now in week 8, I have moved beyond being a passive learner to becoming a proactive strategist. Here is how I am applying these competencies to my ongoing projects:
Design Thinking in Research: I have begun applying design thinking frameworks to my data projects. This ensures that my economic analyses are not just statistically sound but also accessible and user-centric for my readers on this blog.
Effective Communication and Social Impact: A key pillar of YetGen is financial literacy. I am currently translating these lessons into a social responsibility project where I simplify complex financial concepts into a 14-page guide for primary school students. My goal is to democratize financial knowledge at an early age.
Data Literacy and Critical Thinking: The program has sharpened my ability to scrutinize data sources. This is a skill I find indispensable when collaborating on academic research.
YetGen has fundamentally shifted my perspective. Technical expertise in data science or finance is a powerful tool, but its true value is unlocked only when combined with resilience, cross-functional collaboration, and ethical leadership. As I near the completion of this program, I am not just more skilled; I am better equipped to lead at the intersection of sports and economics with a more holistic and human-centered approach.
