'Sports Marketing' by Northwestern University 'Sports and Society' by Duke University
Updated: Aug 8
I completed the Sports Marketing certification from Northwestern. I dived into how sports teams, like my favorite Fenerbahçe, build strong fan engagement and brand loyalty. The course covered strategies that teams and leagues use to market themselves globally, focusing on sponsorships, fan experiences, and digital marketing.
There were homework and while working on them I had the chance to reflect on how Fenerbahçe uses its passionate fan base to create impactful campaigns and partnerships. This course has enhanced my understanding of the business side of sports and how marketing drives the growth of teams worldwide. (You can learn more about the course here.)
Another course I finished last month was 'Sports and Society' and I learnt a lot. Indeed this course opened my eyes to the connections between sports and social issues like race, gender, and commercialization. I read on how sports shape cultural identities, build communities through fan culture, and evolve into a massive global business. This course gave me a broader perspective on the intersection of sports and society, which aligns perfectly with my interests in economics and sports management. I was also glad to be peer viewing activities because it made me feel like I was in a real classroom.
I realised that, sport clubs, including my favorite team, Fenerbahçe, impact society beyond just the game. It made me think about how Fenerbahçe's massive fan base creates a sense of identity and community in Turkey, while also being a part of the global commercialization of sports. This course showed me the importance of analyzing not just the game itself, but the social, economic, and cultural dynamics that come with it. (You can learn more about the course here.)
